Full Guide · Portfolio Balancer

See everything you own, in one place

The Portfolio Balancer tracks every investment you actually hold — savings, ISA, crypto, anything — and shows your true gain or loss, separate from money you simply topped up. Here's how it works.

Step by step

Follow the pins in order — from a blank portfolio to a full picture of what you own.

1
Check your headline numbers
The top bar always shows three things: your Balanced Portfolio Value (the sum of everything, right now), Total Invested (what you've actually put in), and Total Gain (the true difference between the two). These update automatically the moment you add or change anything below.
2
Add an investment
Click + Add Investment and give it a name, optional details, an initial value, and what it's worth today. It doesn't need to be a "real" brokerage account — savings, property, crypto, anything you want tracked in one place works.
3
Keep it accurate with two buttons
Use + Add Funds whenever you top an investment up with new money — this is tracked separately so a deposit is never mistaken for profit. Use ↻ Update Value whenever what it's actually worth changes. Every change is timestamped in that investment's history.
4
Read the allocation chart
The donut chart and the legend beside it show how your money is actually spread across everything you've added — useful for spotting if you're more concentrated in one place than you realised.
5
Sign in to keep it saved
Signed in, your data is saved to your account and will be there next time you log in from any device. Signed out, everything is kept only in this browser. Either way, everything you enter saves automatically — there's no save button to remember, and the status line at the bottom of the screen always tells you which of the two applies right now.
6
Rename an investment, or set its target %
Click the ✎ icon on any card to edit its name and details in place. Underneath, Set Target % lets you say what share of your total portfolio that investment is meant to be — leave it blank and it's treated as an equal split with everything else that also has no target set.
7
See how far you've drifted, with Rebalance
Click ⚖ Rebalance below the allocation table to compare your current % in each investment against its target — either the targets you set, or an equal split. It suggests how much to move into or out of each one to get back on track. This is read-only: it never touches your actual investment values, it's just a suggestion.
8
Just rebalanced? Reset that investment's baseline
If you move money between investments to rebalance, an investment you took money out of will show a value drop that looks like a loss — even though nothing was actually lost. Click reset next to that card's gain/loss figure to set today's value as its new starting point. Nothing in its history is deleted, it just stops counting anything before the reset towards gain/loss.
9
Preview another currency, or adjust for inflation
The Display Currency dropdown at the top converts everything shown on screen — using a real, regularly-refreshed exchange rate — into USD, EUR, VND, CNY, JPY or KRW. It's for this browser tab only: your data stays stored in GBP and the choice resets on reload. Separately, Adjust for Inflation above the chart shows what your current value is worth in "today's money" for a chosen country, using static historical CPI averages — not a currency conversion, and not live.
10
Download your full history
The Download Portfolio History (CSV) link below your investments exports every investment-added, top-up, value-update and baseline-reset event — dated, in GBP — so you always have your own copy outside the tool.

The one thing to understand

This is the whole trick behind the numbers on this page.

Contribution
Money you've added to an investment. It increases its current value and counts towards how much you've invested — so adding £1,000 never shows up as a fake £1,000 "gain".
Update / re-price
A change to what an investment is actually worth today, with no new money involved. This is what moves your gain/loss — because it's compared only against what you've invested, not against a deposit.
Gain / Loss %
Current value minus total invested (initial + every contribution), shown as a percentage of what you've invested. This is your true return — not a number that gets diluted or inflated just because you moved money around.
Balanced Portfolio Value
Simply the sum of every investment's current value. "Balanced" here just means "everything, added together" — it isn't suggesting your allocation is optimal, that's your call.
Target allocation
The % of your total portfolio you intend an investment to make up. Optional per investment — leave it blank and it defaults to an equal split. Used only by Rebalance; it doesn't affect your gain/loss figures.
Baseline reset
Sets an investment's current value as its new starting point for gain/loss, without deleting anything. Use it after rebalancing, so moving money between investments doesn't show up as a fake loss on the one you took money out of.
Display currency
A tab-only preview of your portfolio in another currency, at a real exchange rate. It's the one thing on this page that is live — everything else is exactly as accurate as your last update.

Common mistakes to avoid

⚠️
Logging a top-up as an "Update" instead of "Add Funds". Do this and the tool will show a gain that isn't real — it'll think the extra money was investment growth rather than your own deposit.
⚠️
Assuming this pulls live prices. It doesn't — no investment value here is fetched from real accounts or brokers. Every value is only as accurate as the last time you updated it yourself. (The one exception is the Display Currency dropdown, which does use a real exchange rate — but only to convert what's shown on screen, never your stored investment values.)
⚠️
Rebalancing and forgetting to reset. After you move money between investments to match a suggested rebalance, the investment you took money out of will look like it lost value. Click reset on that card so the shuffle doesn't get recorded as a real loss.
⚠️
Not signing in. If you're not signed in, your data lives only in this browser — clear your cache or switch device and it's gone. Sign in to keep it safe on your account, or use the CSV download to keep your own copy either way.
